In the Vintage Book of Indian Writing published in 1997, Rushdie had remarked that there had ‘been a genuine and other literatures of India’ (p. xvi). Even though some Indian writers contend that Indian realities could only be expressed in the bhashas, Indian publishers have taken up the challenge of bringing out excellent translations into English of literary works in Indian languages at an affordable price for Indian as well as western readers.
