SOUTH ASIA AND CLIMATE CHANGE: UNRAVELLING THE CONUNDRUM by Mausumi Kar, Jayita Mukhopadhyay, and Manisha Deb Sarkar Routledge India, 2022, 247 pp., 995.00
August 2022, volume 46, No 8

This book analyses the impact of climate change in South Asia and its environmental and socio-economic fallouts. It looks at climate change in the region from an interdisciplinary perspective and recommends some policy measures for addressing climate change. The title of the book is interesting and suggests how South Asia is the most vulnerable region of the world to climate change. In doing so, the authors have tried to put forward a holistic view of the emerging climate trends, weather patterns, extreme weather events, and carbon emissions in the region from scientific, political, and socio-economic aspects. The book has attempted to establish the climate change threat based on scientific data and engages with both, theoretical and practical insights.

The edited volume is well timed, with South Asian countries witnessing a cascading climate catastrophe manifested in the form of extreme weather including floods and heatwaves which recur with increasing magnitude and frequency every year. Additionally, its timing is relevant as the world has been engulfed in the COVID-19 pandemic and climate action has taken a back seat.

The book is divided into four sections with each section focusing on the emerging climate trends in the South Asian subcontinent, the issue of climate-induced migration, responses to climate change from South Asian countries, and adaptation strategies.
