INCANTATIONS OVER WATER by Sharanya Manivannan Context | Westland, 2021, 169 pp., 799.00
December 2022, volume 46, No 12

Written in lyrical prose, Sharanya Manivannan’s graphic novel, is a treat to read. It evokes emotions as does powerful poetry. The accompanying sketches by Manivannan recreate a magical world under water. Page colours include multiple shades of blue, red, and yellow, while doodles and writing are in white. The book explores stories and lore about merfolk. The first part of this duology, Mermaids in the Moonlight, is a children’s book that sneaks into the world of mermaids in international waters. Incantations Over Water refers to historical events, and represents Sri Lankan Tamil culture.

Much of the book is inspired by the author’s family history and personal journey of seeking her Self and identity. Sharanya Manivannan has spoken and written widely about a childhood marred by constant displacement and migration from Sri Lanka during the civil war.
