Naram Garam Dosti is a gentle children’s picture book. The story doesn’t follow a traditional pattern of introduction—problem—crescendo—resolution (or any other common pattern, for that matter). It is a slice-of-life story, highlighting the life and experiences of the main characters, and making several important points along the way—but never hitting you over the head with them.

The story follows Kalla—a young boy who will not be receiving the promised sweater-of-his-own this year, as his grandmother’s ill health meant that the family’s earnings were spent on her treatment. Kalla manages the winter in his old holey hand-me-down sweater, figuring out for himself the best ways to navigate the cold–including finding the sunniest patches of the ground where he takes his goats to graze.
