India that is Bharat is seventy-five! A Diamond Jubilee celebrated by leaders who focus on glitter, blind to the bitter reality that cuts sharply through to the truth and suffering of our people, unaware and deaf to the issues that branded and scarred the painful struggle. A loud raucous celebration that mocks the fears and doubts that haunted the men and women about the price of freedom that day. A fear that continues to haunt some of us today. Yet, women have always had the capacity to cut through to the naked truth—their silence and withdrawal more eloquent than all the speeches and slogans marking the Silver Jubilee of our Independence.
