This is the tragic story of Prince Rupinder Bir Singh of Mubarakpur, who lives and dies in search of true love that always eludes his grasp. In an almost Faustian bargain Rupert barters himself body and soul, squanders his inheritance and reputation, and chases a mirage that recedes further and further into the horizon until Tantalus like, he dies of thirst. Hunch, the narrator of the story and Rupert’s confidant, calls it a happy-sad story written to understand why his friend’s life was without the happiness he craved. Robin Gupta has a plot made in heaven with the story of the other side of the coin of the glitz and glamour of royalty, privilege and entitlement of the elite of Delhi and in fact, India.
