WHEN JIYA MET URMILA by Shabnam Minwalla Duckbill Books, 2018, 72 pp., 175
November 2018, volume 42, No 11

This book is about two girls, born on the same stormy July day, but from two completely different backgrounds. Although separated by just a thin wall, they didn’t know of each other or what lay on the other side.

Jiya comes from a wealthy family and is an innocent, kind, good person who likes to stick to the rules. On the other side Urmila is from a poor family and is a carefree, reckless, fun person who is always into some mischief. Due to some unfortunate events, and Jiya getting herself into deep trouble, the two girls get the opportunity to meet each other. At first, they don’t like what they see and question the possibility of the two ever getting along. However, with time they discover two new girls, an unbreakable bond and a friendship that would last forever.

I would recommend this book mostly for children of ages 6-8. However, I must say that I am fourteen years old and I enjoyed reading this book. I feel people of all ages should read this book as it provides an insight into the divisions in our society. This book shows us the invisible wall that we create between each other through our stereotypes, judgements and prejudices.  It shows us how we restrict ourselves from going beyond the divisions of caste, creed, background and wealth which prevents us from acknowledging the people around us. Through this fun, beautifully written story, younger readers understand a bigger message. I feel that this book encourages us to see through the barriers and learn that may be there is someone on the other side, the one that we are looking for.

The artwork in the book is modern, bold and expressive. It brings out the themes of the story very well.

This story reminds me of my group of friends. We are all from different states, speak different languages, have different beliefs—however our friendship is unique and unbreakable! This book can teach young children the importance of accepting and celebrating diversity.
