The Chinese growth story has spawned a number of books in recent times. Almost all of them seek to interpret, criticize, praise and even forecast where the country is headed. This book differs somewhat. It is by an ‘insider-outsider’as indicated in the advertising blurbs. The author Keyu Jin was born in China and spent her early school years there. Her father was a Deputy Minister of Finance and subsequently headed China’s first multilateral development bank: the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. In the early 90s, while still in high school, she went to the US as an exchange student and completed her studies there. Harvard-educated, she is currently Associate Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, UK. She had previously worked in the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, the World Bank and the IMF. So, she has loyalties and commitments both inside and outside China.
