Though the colonial enterprise started with commercial and trade objectives and went on to the acquisition of political power, a number of colonial authorities became interested in the cultural traditions of the colonized societies and engaged in the study of their literary and religious works. The formation of nations all over the world has encouraged the continuation of this practice, and contemporary academic world is intent on tracing the history and contributions of languages and cultures to re-invent and re-establish the identities of societies which are perceived to have been lost during colonization.
