Minority Pasts investigates local history and politics of Rampur, the last Muslim-ruled Princely State in colonial United Provinces, and studies with remarkable ease and competence aspects of political, economic, socio-cultural and affective history of Rampur and the Rampuris in the South Asian subcontinent across borders in the post-1857 period. Rampur survived the turbulent effect of 1857 as Nawab Yusuf Ali Khan maintained his loyalty to the colonial officials in Rohilkhand, otherwise a centre of revolt against the British. These developments inculcated divergent historical experiences post-1857 in Rampur, characterizing it as a prominent centre of cultural and political activities. The inquiry, however, does not stop in the post-1857 colonial period but goes beyond into exploring the post-integration history of Rampur and the Rampuris in postcolonial India.
