On Yasukuni Street at Jimbocho in Japan stands the thirty-year-old Morisaki Bookshop that specializes in second-hand books of the Modern Era and its proprietor is Satoru, the unconventional uncle of the young protagonist Takako. Takako is trying to get over a disappointment in love and is invited by her uncle to stay with him till she finds her feet. The piles of musty books that fill every corner of the store are just bound paper for the young girl who finds refuge from reality in sleep and sulks. Almost predictably, very soon these tomes that mean nothing to Takako who has grown up reading Manga, become her best friends and her window to the whole world of possibilities. As she says on the opening page of the story: ‘I will always remember the days I spent there.
