Akarsh’s Bird Friend by Alaka Shankar is similarly a cute story which encourages young children to think of birds and other little creatures as their friends, to be nurtured rather than harassed. It is clever to have a boy rather than a girl, who feeds and befriends the mynah rather than throw stones at it. The mynah who brings a friend to the party is a lovely incentive for a child. Pity that the setting is ‘a big house that had a lovely garden’, which only a lucky few have, rather than a public park.
