THE RED HILL/LAL PAHAD by Vasavi Oza Eklavya, 2018, 12 pp., 20
November 2018, volume 42, No 11

The book is called Lal Pahad or The Red Hill because the tree looked like a red hill in the beginning. This book is full of pictures and has no words. We have to imagine the story. I tried to make a story but could not find any moral. But I know there is a moral. Even with the animated films I watch, some have a moral and some don’t. Seeing this story in the pictures made me think it is a story with a moral.

It is a story of a huge tree and a tortoise. I felt that the tree was growing taller and taller and the tortoise kept on trying to climb the tree. I think it wanted to live there and make the tree its home.  Finally, it succeeded in climbing the tree. I felt the moral is ‘Try and Try till you succeed.’

The drawings are nice and you can make your own story by looking at it. My friend had a different story when she looked at the book.  Her story was: Once there was a red tree and a turtle came by. The turtle and the tree started talking and they became friends. (She could not figure out if the tree kept growing or shrinking). The turtle wanted to see if he could climb up the tree and live there. While he was climbing the tree, he fell down. She felt that the story ended on a sad note.

I really liked the fact that there were no words, as we could make our own stories.
