This volume of selected poems by Bertolt Brecht trans¬lated into English brings into focus an aspect of Brecht’s creative writing which for a long time was not given its due importance. Brecht has gained world-wide fame as a drama¬tist, as the innovator of the epic theatre and of the ‘alie¬nation technique’ (V-Effekt). What is less well-known how¬ever is the fact that through¬out his life Brecht also wrote poetry,-and that lyrical pro¬duction was for him as impor¬tant as his writings on theatre. By focussing on Brecht as a lyricist, the editors of this volume help in correcting this existing anomaly, thus extend¬ing the picture of Brecht’s creative abilities.
