SOVIET MILITARY STRATEGY (THIRD EDITION) by V.D. Sokolovskiy Macdonald and Jane's, London, 1976, 494 pp., 8.00
April 1976, volume 1, No 2

After A. Svechin’s work entitled Strategy published in 1926, Sokolovskiy’s collection first published in the summer of 1962 was the most comprehensive work on Soviet military strategy. The second and third editions were published in the Soviet Union in August 1963 and March 1968 respectively. An English translation of the first edition with an analytical introduction by Raymond L. Gorthoff was published in London and New York in 1963. Later, an independent Rand Corporation Study by Thomas W. Wolfe incorporating the ideas contained in the second edition of Sokolovskiy’s work was published in 1964. The present publication by Harriet Fast Scott of the Strategic Studies Centre of Stanford Research Institute is an English translation of the third edition with commentary and analysis. It contains useful notes commenting on the types of changes that have appeared in the subsequent two editions and drawing attention to their significance.
